GREEN TEA.

Green tea is a wise choice for people who want to stay cancer free. It has a high content of polyphenols, a type of antioxidant very effective at reducing the concentration of cancer-causing free radicals. Asian men who customarily drink several cups of green tea every day, have a very low incidence of prostate cancer and cancer-related death in general.

A NEW BOOK....HEALING CANCER.
I have just read a new book which I found in my local library: Healing Cancer, by Dr. Abram Hoffer with Linus Pauling. (2004), CCNM Press. I believe it is of value to persons with cancer. The back cover of the book summarizes:
"Healing Cancer not only refutes critics of megavitamin treatment for cancer through the evidence of Dr. Hoffer's case studies and Dr. Pauling's statistical analysis, but. more importantly, offers new hope to cancer patients for surviving this disease. Featuring hundreds of case studies, this book will be of value not only to cancer patients but also to healthcare professionals."

MORE ON POMEGRANATE JUICE.
A new study published in October 2005 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences Early Edition shows why pomegranates should be part of every man's menu. The reason? The juice from the red kernels has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, capable of fighting prostate cancer. Laboratory studies have shown that pomegranate juice extract is capable of slowing cancer progression, lowering the PSA level, and inducing the synthesis of two powerful tumour-fighting proteins. The study's authors suggested that pomegranate juice may excercise chemo-preventative effects, in combination with its chemo- therapeutic ones - hence the recommended use for human consumption.

PESTICIDES.

A big culprit in prostate cancer in particular and cancer in general, is the presence of pesticides on almost every type of conventionally-grown produce. Pesticides are big sources of xenoestrogens, chemical substances resembling hormones, which can wreak havoc in the human body. Bottom line: Go Organic. As the Vancouver researcher Lurie puts it, " Anyone who has a prostate or breasts should eat organic."

EATING SOY.
.
Eat soy in order to get some protein. Not every soy product though. It should be organic soy products, since the genetically modified ones may pose other yet-unknown health problems. Some soy products present in Asian diets have been shown to inhibit prostate cancer cell growth. Asian men who move to Western countries develop a higher risk for prostate cancer, which suggests that diet makes a difference to prostate cancer.

WHAT YOU EAT IS IMPORTANT.
.
According to a new study published in September of this year. high levels of triglycerides may be one trigger for prostate cancer. " Eating a diet high in animal products will almost double the risk of prostate cancer," says Dr. Vince Lurie (ND), a naturopathic physician at Alta Vista Naturopathic Clinic in Vancouver, B.C. Highly refined foods in general, he says, should be avoided, as they increase the levels of triglycerides in the body, leading to prostate problems as well as other chronic diseases.

ANTI CANCER VEGETABLES: ADVICE FROM SALLY ERREY (NUTRITIONIST).

Veggies
Lots! But with some exceptions, the "above ground" type or portion. To absorb their carotenoids you'll need some oil with the veggie. Any amount; dark colored ones are best. Fresh & little processed [steamed] is preferred.Go easy on the rapidly absorbed starchy carbs from potatoes. The colored ones have many types of carotenoid [like vitamin A] & flavonoids [phytochemicals] that prevent all kinds of unhappy events (cancer, heart & vascular trouble, strokes, etc). Especially the "above-ground" portions of veggies has fiber, slow-release energy and no fat. Cabbage, broccoli & Brussels sprouts are anti-cancer. Garlic is heart-healthy.
5 to 10 portions of -fruits and veggies daily.
