PRAYER.

Praying for wellness is quickly proving to be a legitimate addition to conventional medical treatment. If you're interested in this subject, I recommend you read an excellent book on this topic, Reinventing Medicine: Beyond Mind-Body to a New Era of Healing, by Larry Dossey, M.D. (Harper San Francisco, 1999). In his book, Dr. Dossey describes a growing body of scientific evidence attesting to the power of prayer in healing - and not only the prayers you make for yourself or that friends and relatives may offer when you're ill. It seems the prayers of strangers - people who know only a patient's first name and diagnosis, and live many miles away - can also influence the medical outcome.

GARLIC AND CANCER.
.
The link between garlic and the prevention of several types of cancer (especially stomach, breast, prostate, bladder, and colon cancers) is particularly strong. The US National Cancer Institute recently reported "a host of studies provide compelling evidence" that compounds in garlic inhibit cancer, and a 2003 Israeli study published in the Journal of Molecular Cancer Therapy credits allicin, a sulphur compound in garlic with stopping tumour growth within two weeks.

FLAXSEED.

Lignans flaxseed is the richest known source of lignans, naturally occurring plant estrogens that are thought to relieve symptoms of menopause as well as protect against cancer of the breast, prostate, and colon. The shell of the flaxseed has a very high concentration of lignans, which are not present in significant amounts in flaxseed oil unless ground flax seeds have been added to the oil

INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE.
Dr. Weil defines integrative medicine as, "healing-oriented medicine that takes account of the whole person (body, mind, and spirit), including all aspects of lifestyle. It emphasizes the therapeutic relationship and makes use of all appropriate therapies, both conventional and alternative."

Integrative medicine enhances quality of life by using minimally invasive, non-toxic treatments such as dietary modifications, herbal and nutritional therapies, mind-body interaction, energetic medicine, acupuncture, massage and body work, behaviour modification, and traditional healing methods.

ANTIOXIDANTS NEUTRALIZE FREE RADICALS IN THE BODY.
.
A complex network of antooxidants composed of several players work as a team, so it is important to consider a balanced spectrum of antioxidants. In addition to vitamins, A,C, and E, antioxidants include vitamin D, folic acid, and selenium; epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) from green tea; alpha lipoic acid from red meat, spinach, broccoli, and tomatoes; lycopene from red tomatoes and processed tomato products; resveratrol from red wine; oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) from grapeseed extract; sulforaphane from broccoli; curcumin from tumeric; and quercetin from apples, onions, and black tea.

PROSTATE CANCER SHRINKS UNDER THE LIGHT.
.
An experimental light-activated drug, designed to eradicate deadly tumours without surgery or side effects, is showing promising results with prostate cancer, a Montreal researcher says.
The drug trademarked Tookad was tested in men with recurring prostate cancer.
The first phase clinical trials held in Montreal, London (England), and in Ontario between April 2004 and February 2005 showed a one-time injection of the drug shrunk the tumours by as much as 84 per cent.

OBESITY: A RISK FACTOR FOR CANCER.
.
Everyone knows that smoking is a major cause of cancer. Yet, according to research published in the British Journal of Public Health (2001), obese adults have more chronic health problems than their smoking counterparts.
.
More than 30 known diseases are now believed to be directly linked to excess body fat, including heart disease, diabetes, peridontal disease, inflammation, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, infertility, and many cancers (including gastrointestinal, colon, kidney, esophagus, prostate, breast and endometrial).
.
Over the last several years, more scientists have come to accept that there is a link between obesity and cancer.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES.
.
A recent landmark study found that healthful life-style changes (exercise, meditation, vegetarian diet) reversed PSA progression in early prostate cancer. This study clearly indicates that the course of early prostate cancer can be substantially altered with healthful life-style changes. In fact, the study points to the possibility that early prostate cancer may actually be reversed by engaging in exercise, vegetarian diet and meditation - a truly landmark study in cancer research.

VEGETARIANS SHOW REDUCED RATE OF CANCER.
.
Population studies, conducted over long periods of time, have shown that a vegetarian diet can reduce the risk of some cancers.
A commonly researched group, the Seventh Day Adventists, most of whom follow a lacto-ovo vegetarian diet for religious reasons, have as low as half the cancer rate of an equivalent population. One of two health studies conducted among Seventh Day Adventists at Loma Linda University in California, following 34,000 Adventists between 1976 and 1982, found significantly lower risk of developing cancers at most of the major cancer sites (stomach, lung, pancreas, rectum, bladder, and large intestine) in Adventists following a vegetarian diet.

FOODS FOR CANCER PREVENTION.
.
Colourful fruit and veggies such as tomatoes, blueberries, tumeric, yams, and beets are rich in health - promoting bioflavonoids. Even red beans, a staple for vegetarian chili, have powerful cancer- fighting pigments in their skin. Also choose whole grains (such as barley and brown and wild rice), onions and garlic, and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, kale and cauliflower.
