An experimental light-activated drug, designed to eradicate deadly tumours without surgery or side effects, is showing promising results with prostate cancer, a Montreal researcher says.

The drug trademarked Tookad was tested in men with recurring prostate cancer.

The first phase clinical trials held in Montreal, London (England), and in Ontario between April 2004 and February 2005 showed a one-time injection of the drug shrunk the tumours by as much as 84 per cent.
